Total navy ship strength by country. The second oldest battlefield on earth - the sea - pushes the need for leading military powers to field a strong, capable navy.

For thousands of years, strength at sea has been one of the defining military factors of any world power. Naval strength is used to respond to territorial disputes as well as enforce maritime borders and protect national interests. Today's navies are often required to operate thousands of miles away from homeports with combat not necessarily requiring line-of-sight. Couple these qualities with the expansive reach of carrier aircrafts, naval helicopters and UAVs and the oceans become a lethal battlefield all their own.

The listing below includes battle force ships made up of aircraft carriers, frigates, destroyers, corvettes, torpedo boats, patrol boats, amphibious support craft and landing craft (regardless of onboard technology employed, crew training, fleet quality, etc.). Auxiliary vessels are also included. Landlocked nations are NOT penalized for the lack of a standing naval force and are, thus, excluded from this particular list.

Aircraft carrier is a warship that serves as a seagoing airbase, equipped with a full-length flight deck and facilities for carrying, arming, deploying, and recovering aircraft. Typically, it is the capital ship of a fleet, as it allows a naval force to project air power worldwide without depending on local bases for staging aircraft operations.

Cruiser is a type of warship. In the middle of the 19th century, cruiser came to be a classification for the ships intended for cruising distant waters, commerce raiding, and scouting for the battle fleet.

Destroyer is a fast, maneuverable long-endurance warship intended to escort larger vessels in a fleet, convoy or battle group and defend them against smaller powerful short-range attackers.

In modern navies, frigates are used to protect other warships and merchant-marine ships, especially as anti-submarine warfare (ASW) combatants for amphibious expeditionary forces, underway replenishment groups, and merchant convoys.

Corvette is a small warship. It is traditionally the smallest class of vessel considered to be a proper (or "rated") warship. The warship class above the corvette is that of the frigate, while the class below was historically that of the sloop-of-war.

The littoral combat ship (LCS) is a class of relatively small surface vessels intended for operations in the littoral zone (close to shore) by the United States Navy. It was "envisioned to be a networked, agile, stealthy surface combatant capable of defeating anti-access and asymmetric threats in the littorals.

Submarine (or simply sub) is a watercraft capable of independent operation underwater. It differs from a submersible, which has more limited underwater capability. The term most commonly refers to a large, crewed vessel.
